**************Christmas Stocking Project****************
Christmas Stocking Project - POLK
For many, many years our church has participated in the Polk Christmas Stocking Project. This is a church women united project with many churches in our area participating. For over 20 years our own Pat Daisher was Director. Now, the Presbyterian Church has taken over that responsibility.
I would like to give you some information about the project. Polk Center Hospital was established in 1897. It is located in Venango County, 75 miles south of Erie. It is the largest of 8 institutions in Pennsylvania for the mentally challenged. The purpose of the hospital is to provide a structured environment for these people whose handicap is often quite severe. This project is extremely important. Often, the stockings are the only gifts the residents receive.
Brenda Kennedy started the program of having the Life Skills class at the Clearfield Area Middle School help with the stockings about 10 years ago. As a member of our church she asked if her class could help since it is an opportunity to get them involved and teaches them simple serving tasks. The students work individually and in groups to make the stockings and then fill them in an assembly line. As a thank you, the students started coming to our bazaar and luncheon as guests of our United Methodist Women. In the past few years at Christmas, the students have received filled stockings made by the women as a thank you. Since Brenda retired, the new Life Skills teacher agreed to continue working with the project.
Last year our church completed 40 stockings with additional coloring books and crayons delivered. This year I would like to try something different. Instead of focusing on many items, we could just focus on several items a month.
UPDATE; While continuing our ongoing stocking project I realize most of us are not thinking Christmas during the warm and sultry months of July and August. We need to have all items collected by September. As of this date response has been minimal. Please collect toothpaste, small stuffed animals and women's socks. Also you may opt to give a monetary gift to this project so that items needed can be purchased.
They can be placed in our Mission Central room labeled "Stocking Project".
Have a great summer, Ellen Vallimont, 765-4869

************BIBLE STUDY*************
Thursday AM Bible Study Beginning September 16 10:00AM
"This We Believe: The Core of Wesleyan Faith and Practice"
For John Wesley, the Bible is the joyfully consistent testimony of God's never-ending grace and ever-seeking love. Likewise, studying the Bible is more than merely knowing what Scripture says; it is also about living every day as a child of God. Pastor Joleen will lead this 8-week study which looks at what we as United Methodists believe about God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, the Bible, Salvation, and the Church in a down-to-earth, understandable way. It introduces what we believe and how these beliefs effect our living.
Written by William H. Willimon, Presiding Bishop of the North Alabama Conference of The United Methodist Church, Birmingham, Alabama Area, and Visiting Research Professor, Duke Divinity School, Durham, North Carolina.
Books are $10.50. Please place orders with Frankie in the Church Office.
